You’re running Klaviyo for email marketing and you want to offer signup discounts. But you’ve got marquee products that shouldn’t be discounted - bestsellers, premium items, high-margin products.
Here’s where it gets messy. You want unique coupon codes (every customer gets their own code, not a generic “WELCOME10” that gets shared everywhere). But Klaviyo’s product exclusion works backwards - you have to manually tick every product that is eligible for the discount.
If you’ve got hundreds or thousands of products, this is a nightmare. Scrolling through endless lists, ticking boxes one by one, inevitably missing items or including products you meant to exclude. There’s a better way.
The solution: flip the logic using Shopify smart collections
Instead of managing exclusions in Klaviyo, manage them in Shopify using product tags and smart collections. Here’s how it works.
Step 1: Tag products you want to exclude
Go into Shopify and tag any product you want to exclude from discounts. Use no-discount as the tag name.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products
- Select the product you want to exclude
- Scroll to the Tags section
- Add the tag:
no-discount - Click Save
Repeat for every premium product or item you want to exclude.
If you've got multiple products to tag at once, select them from your Products list, click Bulk actions → Add tags, and add no-discount to all selected items.
Step 2: Create a smart collection that excludes tagged products
Create a Shopify smart collection that automatically includes all products except those tagged with no-discount.
- In Shopify admin, go to Products → Collections
- Click Create collection
- Name it
Discount Available(or whatever makes sense for your store) - Under Collection type, select Automated
- Set the condition: Product tag → is not equal to →
no-discount - Click Save
Your smart collection now contains every product except the ones tagged no-discount. What this does:
- New products automatically get included (unless you tag them
no-discount) - Change your mind about a product? Remove the tag and it becomes eligible
- Want to exclude more products? Tag them
no-discountand they drop out
Step 3: Point Klaviyo at your smart collection
Go back into Klaviyo and configure your discount code to apply only to products in your Discount Available collection.
- In Klaviyo, go to your coupon code settings (usually in your signup flow or welcome series)
- When setting up discount parameters, look for Applies to or Product restrictions
- Select Specific collections
- Choose your
Discount Availablesmart collection - Save your settings
Your unique coupon codes now apply to everything in that collection - which means everything except your tagged exclusions.
Why this works better
You manage a single tag in Shopify instead of ticking hundreds of individual products in Klaviyo. New products are eligible by default unless you tag them - no more accidentally including new launches in the wrong promotions.
Changed your mind about a product? Remove the tag. Want to exclude seasonal items temporarily? Add the tag during that period, remove it when you’re ready to discount again. Your product discount eligibility lives in Shopify where your product data already lives, not split between two platforms. Whether you have 50 products or 5,000, the process is the same.
When to use this
This works well for:
- Luxury or premium product lines that never get discounted
- New launches you want to exclude for the first 30-60 days
- Low-margin products where discounts kill profitability
- Limited edition or seasonal items that sell at full price
- Bestsellers that don’t need discount incentives
That’s it
Tag the products you want to exclude with no-discount, create a smart collection that includes everything except tagged products, and point Klaviyo at that collection.
If you’re running Klaviyo and Shopify together, this saves hours of manual product management.
FAQ
Can I use different tags for different exclusions?+
Yes. Create multiple smart collections with different tag logic. Tag no-discount for permanent exclusions, no-discount-seasonal for temporary ones, and build separate collections for each promotional campaign.
Does this work with percentage discounts, fixed amounts, or both?+
Both. The smart collection approach works with any discount type - 10% off, £10 off, free shipping, whatever you configure in Klaviyo.
What if I want products that are only eligible for specific discounts?+
Create multiple smart collections with different tag logic. For example, a VIP Discount Only collection with tag vip-eligible, and a Standard Discount collection with logic that excludes both no-discount and vip-eligible.
Do I need to do anything when I add new products?+
No. New products automatically appear in the Discount Available collection unless you tag them no-discount.
Can I see which products are currently eligible?+
Go to your Discount Available smart collection in Shopify. Everything shown there is eligible for discounts.
Does this affect the checkout experience?+
No, this only controls which products the discount code applies to.
